Atascadero State Hospital



The Atascadero State Hospital, also known as "ASH" by locals and employees, employs 1800 people. It is the largest employer in the city.

One of killer Charlie Manson's henchmen spent time in the Atascadero State Hospital before being tried for his crimes.

Psych Tech training

The hospital runs a number of onsite training programs including nurse practitioner programs. The training of "psych techs" is a growing field and the hospital provides jobs for many psych techs. It also cooperates to help candidates qualify for the psych tech designation. Training takes one full year and a graduate can expect to make $50,000 per year after graduation.

Atascadero employs a staff of over 1,800, with on-site training programs for a variety of schools, including nurse practitioner programs, clinical psychology internship programs, and psychiatric technician training.

Atascadero hospital was built in 1954 and is run by the State of California. It is a forensic psychiatric facility and is fully secured. The Superior Court of California Board of Prison Terms and the Department of Corrections.
